It’s no secret that I love essential oils, herbs, crystals and all of the other wonderful things we can use to make us feel better, courtesy of nature! Nature offers such a vast array of tools to support our wellbeing, and one thing I’m particularly passionate about is essential oils.
Lately, I’ve been navigating some emotional ups and downs - partly due to the transition into perimenopause and hormonal shifts, and partly because of the intense energetic changes taking place globally. To support myself during this time I’ve been focusing on nourishing food, regular exercise, time outdoors and plenty of herbal teas! Alongside my self-care practices, essential oils have become a valuable part of my emotional wellness toolkit.
There is evidence to support the fact that essential oils can help us with our psychological, emotional and physical wellbeing – when we inhale essential oils, the aromatic molecules travel through the nose, stimulating the olfactory nerve which then sends a signal to the brain. This process activates the limbic system(the area of the brain linked to emotion and memory), helping to promote relaxation, reduce stress and uplift a low mood. Essential oils can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, including:
Adding a few drops to your bath
Incorporating them into your skincare
Using them with a diffuser or oil burner
Applying them topically via a roller for direct skin contact and aromatic benefit
It’s important to remember that some essential oils can cause irritation if used undiluted on the skin so always mix them with a carrier oil such as Sweet Almond, Jojoba or Coconut oil. I tend to use Sweet Almond Oil as I love how silky it feels!
To help me with my recent mood fluctuations, I created an Essential Oil Roller using Sweet Almond Oil as a base, combined with my homemade Wild Rose essential oil and a few drops of Geranium. Both Rose and Geranium are renowned for their uplifting, balancing and heart-opening properties so together, they create a beautifully comforting aroma. I filled the bottle with the Sweet Almond Oil and Rosehip Oil blend, and then added several drops of Geranium. I bought my roller bottles in bulk on eBay so that I could create different blends for various moods and intentions. They’re quite reasonable to buy – always choose one with darker glass as light affects essential oils, this is why Neals Yard Remedies always use blue bottles!
